In Washington D.C., there is one main agency that administers DMV-related services:

Washington D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

To begin, select from the following

Driver’s License

Within 60 days of moving to a new part of Washington D.C., you are required to change your address on your Washington D.C. driver’s license or ID card. This can be done

  • Online (if you have a REAL ID, limited purpose DL or ID card)
  • In-person at a DMV location.

They will likely request your current driver’s license number and your new address. Within a couple weeks of updating your information, you will receive your updated Washington D.C. driver’s license or ID card.

 

Vehicle Registration

When moving within the state of Washington D.C. you are required to contact the state in regards to renewing a vehicle registration. If you’ve already changed your address with the Washington D.C. How to Apply for Your New Washington D.C. Driver’s License

To transfer your out-of-state driver’s license, you will likely need to bring:

  • Documents proving your identification (a valid, unexpired driver’s license from another U.S. state or territory)
  • Proof of car insurance.
  • Proof of social security number.
  • A vehicle with a valid registration.

Vehicle Registration

Within 30 days of moving to Washington D.C., it is required that new residents register their vehicles with the state. It is required that you visit a Washington D.C. State office. Act Quickly!

  • A valid form of Identification (Driver’s License or U.S. Passport).
  • Your vehicle title(s).
  • All vehicle owners on the title must be present or a power of attorney must be presented for the owners who are not present.

Voter Registration in Washington D.C.

To vote in Washington D.C. elections you must have a valid and approved voter registration. You will need to register to vote through the Washington D.C. Department of State.

Photo identification at the polling booth is a must in Washington D.C.

To be eligible to vote in Washington D.C., you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be a Washington D.C. resident.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • NOT been convicted of a disqualifying felony.
  • NOT be declared “mentally incompetent” by a court.

How to Register Online to Vote in Washington D.C.

When registering online, you must have a valid Washington D.C. driver’s license or you will need to apply by mail.
