What is Deregulated Electricity?
In the majority of states, when you move to a new city, you’re stuck with whatever energy plan has been selected by your county or local municipality. It’s a vertically integrated monopoly utility system that’s overseen by whichever public regulator (city or county) your home falls under, and customers have no say in who they can sign up with. Consumers don’t have the option to compare electricity suppliers or to get the best gas and electricity deals, and are stuck with whatever rate they’re given.
Deregulated electricity markets are managed differently, and offer more choices to consumers. For example, in some states, customers might have the choice to choose their gas and/or electric providers, as well as the choice to opt for renewable energy. Additionally, they can shop for the best electricity rates and have the power to switch their electricity supplier. Plans are sold by retail suppliers, also called load serving entities—consumers can shop around and buy energy plans from these suppliers.
UtilityHound has partnered with energy providers in select states to help consumers shop for the best gas and electric deals. We will compare electricity suppliers for you, discuss energy plans that are available in your area, and even help you switch your electricity supplier. And in some cases, the electricity suppliers offer exclusive low rates for UtilityHound customers. Here are the states where you have energy choices:
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New York
- Rhode Island
- Washington D.C.
