What is National Preparedness Month

Dating back to 2001 the government has urged citizens to make survival plans in preparation of national disasters. The month of September was decided on after many Americans went through the horrors of September 11, 2001. Being prepared sounds like common sense. However, it was noted in a previous survey that less than 50% of the population have an emergency plan in place. - Water – 1 gallon of water, per individual, per day for a minimum of 3-days
- Food – minimum 3-day supply of non-perishable food, per person
- Radio- stay current on your situation
- Extra batteries
- Towelettes / Hand Sanitizer
- Manual Can Opener- for food
- Local map(s)
- First aid kit
- Whistle- to signal for help
- Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
- Prescription Medications
- Pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids or laxatives
- Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream
- Pet food and extra water for your pet
- Cash or traveler’s checks
- Personal hygiene items
- Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
- Matches in a waterproof container
- Chlorine bleach and medicine dropper to disinfect water
